CSI Stick Frequently Asked Questions Download the CSI Stick User Guide
Below are some common questions users have about the CSI Stick:
Q: How do I update my CSI Stick?
A: You can update your CSI Stick by using the Update CSI Stick feature in DS Lite or Device Seizure. You can also download the CSI Stick Updater.
Q: Will the CSI Stick support other phone manufacturers?
A: Yes. A new generation of CSI Stick is being developed and will support many more phones and manufacturers.
Q: How do I view the data I download from a phone to the CSI Stick?
A: Data acquisitions are stored on the CSI Stick as .STK files. These files can only be read in Device Seizure or Device Seizure Lite.
Q: How many phones can I acquire on the CSI Stick before I have to remove previous acquisitions?
A: This depends on the amount of data stored on the phones you acquire. The CSI Stick can store approximately 1 GB of data. Many textual data acquisitions are only a few hundred KB. This means you could potentially store hundreds of cell phone acquisitions.
Q: How do I keep track of the phone acquisitions?
A: The CSI Stick stores phone acquisitions in a naming convention that allows you to track your acquisitions by the name of the phone models acquired. The CSI Stick will create a folder for the manufacturer of the cell phone. Within this folder, the acquisitions will be stored using the following naming convention:
Manufacturer[model](file number).stk
So, if you were to acquire a Motorola V3, your acquisition file would be called Motorola[V3].stk. If you were to acquire more Motorola V3 phones or if you were to acquire the same phone multiple times, the files would be saved as Motorola[V3](1).stk, Motorola[V3](2).stk, etc.
Q: I cannot delete files off of my CSI Stick. Why?
A: This can be caused by starting a second acquisition without disconnecting the CSI Stick from the phone and letting the phone and the CSI Stick complete the first acquisition. The CSI Stick and the phone need time to finish all processes before reconnecting and starting a new acquisition. This can also be caused improperly unplugging the CSI Stick from Windows. Sometimes, a system reboot is the only way to regain permissions to delete CSI Stick files.
Q: How do I know if the CSI Stick established a connection with my phone?
A: When you connect the phone to the CSI Stick and power supply, the two green lights will start blinking. This indicates that the CSI Stick is establishing a connection with the phone. You will know you have a successful connection when the two green lights turn solid. At this point, you can push the Start Acquisition button and start your download. If the connection has failed, the green lights will stop blinking and a red light will appear.
Q: How do I know if the CSI Stick acquired data from my phone?
A: After you have established a connection with the phone and pressed the Start Acquisition button, one of the green lights will start blinking. This means an acquisition is in progress. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the type of acquisition selected and the amount of data on the cell phone. The acquisition is finished when the single blinking light stops blinking and the two green lights turn solid.
Q: I get a connection error on a supported model. Why?
A: Be sure you disconnect the stick from the phone between acquisitions. You may need to turn the phone off then on again. Another cause of this may be low batteries on the remote charger.
